Abstract:Jerome David Salinger is a famous American writer in the American literary history. He describes the image of an anti-hero, Holden in The Catcher in the Rye. This thesis analyzes the positive and negative sides of Holden’s personality and the factors in shaping his character. Through the discussion, we can find that Holden is the victim of an era and the tragedy of the time. After WWII, American people only attached importance to material world and ignored the spiritual world. Holden’s school, friends and parents ignore his inner world. He can’t feel any happiness and power in his life, so he escapes from the real world. Therefore, by shaping the image of Holden, an anti-hero, Salinger wants to call for people’s attention to the youth and their inner world.-
