Abstract:This graduation paper focuses on the merits and demerits of a minor character in Charlotte’s Web named Templeton. The spider Charlotte is honest and selfless. Comparatively, Templeton, the one who always sets out early and comes back late is such a nuisance. On the one hand, Templeton is selfish and mean, and it is rare for him not to ask something for return when he is needed to help. He is greedy. He will grasp any opportunity to get anything into his cave, whether they are useful or not. He is such a devil in the eyes of the other animals. On the other hand, he is also shrew and diligent. His tubes are all over Mr. Zukerman’s farm; moreover, he can always make a turn of every critical moment when any other animal feels helpless. The researcher draws a conclusion that the figure of Templeton is featured more closer to our real life, for he is not living in others’ expectations whereas he leads a more natural and free life. It is the guts he carries all the way in his life of being himself that is worth admiring.
