Autonomy, which believes that learners should assume more responsibility for their own study, is considered as one objective of the language education. As to learner autonomy, it is a comprehensive requirement of the learners’ attitudes, abilities, behaviors and awareness. It is a successive process of the interaction between ability and behavior of the individuals.
However, many students are lacking enough confidence and proper motivation in their English learning. They are not prepared for learner autonomy and use improper metacognitive strategies, etc. All these problems have great effect on learner autonomy.
In order to promote the students’ learning autonomy, it is necessary to for the teachers to cultivate modern teaching concepts, lead the students to have a clear learning objective, inspire the learning interests of the students, and make use of the flexible teaching methods, etc. In the process of second language acquisition, learners should spend more time in fostering learner autonomy. Teachers should create a conductive learning environment in which learners will assume more responsibility for their own English learning.
