Abstract
With China’s reform and opening , the necessity of English teaching has been put on agenda and English has become part of people’s daily life. Unfortunately, the present situation of English teaching and learning seems to fail to meet the needs of China’s economic and social development. There is no denying that in English learning, reading plays an essential part in improving learners’ comprehensive language competence. However, traditional reading teaching over—emphasizes the importance of grammar and vocabulary, while ignoring the cultivation of students’ positive thinking and the ability of understanding and analyzing thesis. Faced with this dilemma, the New English Curriculum has been set as the standard to judge and improve students’ practical language competence. This paper will study English reading teaching strategies from the perspective of the New English Curriculum. It will lay stress on the introduction of The National English Curriculum, the teaching of English reading under the National English Curriculum and the application of the strategies of English reading teaching.
