Abstract
English reading, as one of the four basic skills of language and an aspect of communicative competence, has drawn more and more attention in the language circles. English reading is widely seen as an effective way in helping students study English and fundamentally improve their English language competence.
However, the research has shown that English reading teaching hours are quite limited in middle school. If English reading teaching is only limited to the classroom teaching, it is far from being adequate to achieve teaching students the reading skills that are required by the general syllabus. Here comes the second classroom. The Second Classroom can provide students with more time and opportunities to learn English. In order to combine the second classroom and English reading teaching properly to improve students' interest in learning English and to improve their English reading ability, we did the investigations and researches in Linping No.3 Middle School.
This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One describes the current situation of the second classroom of English reading teaching in Linping No.3 Middle school, as well as the relationship between extracurricular English reading and the second classroom. Chapter Two mainly introduces the researches on extracurricular English reading at home and abroad. Chapter Three mainly discusses the research methods including the design and its implementation. Chapter Four is the study result and its analysis. Chapter Five includes the findings of the study, the implication for teaching and its research limitations.
The research tried to explore the present situation of the second classroom of English reading teaching in junior high school; the principles of choosing reading materials in the second classroom of English reading teaching in junior high school; how to deal with the extracurricular reading materials to improve students' reading comprehension ability. We wish those experience and methods will be valuable for the following study.
