Abstract
The development of students’ intercultural communicative competence is one of the major objectives of English teaching in middle schools. However, it is insufficient to achieve this goal only in English classroom teaching. This paper is based on the study of how Hangzhou Greentown Yuhua middle school creates the unique school spirit to develop students’ intercultural communicative competence. During a three-month internship and observation, the author focuses on the extracurricular activities and international programs in the school. After analyzing these activities and programs, we can find the influences they have on developing students’ intercultural communicative competence. Meanwhile, in order to know students’ feelings about those activities, the author interviewed ten students from grade one, two and three respectively. This research finds out that the running of some intramural activities such as International Culture Festival and Model United Nations Conference, the organization of the international exchange programs as well as the design of optional courses in Hangzhou Greentown Yuhua Middle School are of great help for developing students’ intercultural communicative competence, and they enrich the way of developing middle school students’ intercultural communicative competence.
