Abstract: Independent study is a form of learning promoted by our country in reforming program for elementary curriculums. Bing a kind of ability, independent learning cannot be only to strengthen the student’s study, but also be good for the student’s life-long learning and development. With the promotion and propulsion of the new curriculum, we pay more attention to our student’s independent study. First, this paper discussed the current situation of our autonomous learning to illustrate the importance of independent study, which let us to know the challenge and problem that students facing today. Then we explore the independent study of the different views including china and other western countries, explaining respectively the definition of independent study. Next part, we analyze the factors that influence the independent student’s study in English study of the external factor including students themselves, school, families and society. All these figures that show the problem is not only caused by students themselves, but also involves many other external factors. At last, we introduce the learning strategies and methods which focus on students’ independent study. It offers advice and help to all the middle school students, which are beneficial for student’s long-term development.
