Abstract
In recent years, teacher and student interaction in class has become a hot topic in the research of English teaching. More and more scholars are shifting their attention to teacher-student interaction in order to find out effective ways to promote teacher-student interaction in classrooms. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the influence of teacher’s verbal feedback on teacher-student interaction to offer suggestions to teacher’s verbal feedback in junior middle school English classroom to increase teacher-student interaction and teaching quality.
The research questions focus on two aspects in Chinese junior middle school class teaching: (1) the influence of teacher’s verbal feedback on teacher-student interaction; (2) the problems of teacher’s verbal feedback. The thesis integrates documentary method and statistical approach, choosing the three videos of the eighth English Contest as research subjects, transforming teacher’s verbal feedback in the videos into words to diagnose the influence and problems of teacher-student interaction by analyzing students’ reaction.
Based on the data analysis, this study finds that teacher’s verbal feedback has both positive and negative impact on teacher-student interaction according to the form and quantity. Moreover, the statistics show that students’ degree and interest of participating in teaching activities vary a lot. The biggest difficulty of using teacher’s verbal feedback is that most students will escape the interaction with teachers. Therefore, the thesis holds the view that increasing students’ interest and enthusiasm of class activities is the basis of improving teacher-student interaction through teacher’s verbal feedback. Teachers can improve teacher’s verbal feedback from these two perspectives.
Key words: teacher’s verbal feedback, teacher-student interaction, learning efficiency
