Abstract
Grammar learning is an important part in English learning. It concerns accuracy and logic in a sentence. This study aims to explore the situation of the use of English grammar learning strategies of junior middle school students and to analyze the frequency of English grammar learning strategies. The research question is the present situation of English grammar learning strategies in use of junior middle school students. Then, some measures on how to optimize the grammar learning strategies will be offered to improve the efficiency in English learning of junior middle school students.
This study takes advantage of the literature to summarize the grammar learning strategies. A statistical analysis on students in Grade 8 of a middle school about the situation of grammar learning strategies is performed with the help of questionnaire . The main findings are as follows:
(1) The current condition is that the English grammar learning strategy in middle school students is at a low level used. The reason is that students don’t comprehend the positive role of learning strategy, some of them completely ignore the value of grammar learning strategies. They wrongly think that grammar learning only needs reciting.
(2) Among the four grammar learning strategy, affective strategy, cognitive strategy and metacognitive strategy are employed in a medium level, while social strategy is used at low frequency. During the process of grammar learning, affective strategy is the most frequently used, and cognitive strategy ranks the second.
Generally speaking, students’ unconscious statement of the use of grammar learning strategies leads to low learning efficiency. Students should have positive attitude towards grammar learning and have a good comprehension of grammar learning strategies.They should employ all kinds of grammar learning strategies according to learning objectives. Also, teachers should know the need of students’ grammar learning and help students form the suitable English grammar learning strategies.
