Abstract
Acquisition of vocabulary is very important in the students’ communicating with each other; however, at times students ignore the vocabulary in learning English. In middle school vocabulary teaching, word formation theory is helpful for learners to enlarge vocabulary to develop the abilities of description, expression and social communication in the acquisition of second language.-Most students are aware of the importance of mastering the vocabulary, how to teach students to recognize, memorize and use words in communication is the most rigorous problem faced by English teacher. But if students do not have scientific and efficient way to learn English vocabulary, they will be difficult to use vocabulary correctly. Therefore, according word formation teaching theories, instructs students to use word formation method to effectively memorize words, the author aims to help students increase vocabulary and improve their English level.
This paper divided into four main parts: Firstly, the author presents the overview of word formation; it involves the definition and the classification of word formation. The second part is the current situation of vocabulary learning and teaching. Some teaching misunderstanding will be presented in this part. The third and the forth part describe the most significant in this paper. It will describe how to apply the various word formation theories in vocabulary teaching and the author will mentioned many useful strategies.
