ABSTRACT
As cultural soft power is an important factor of a country’s strength, it is very important to disseminate Chinese culture correctly in the background of “going out strategy” of Chinese culture. As a media of mass culture, movie plays an important role in cultural exchange activities, therefore, the rationality and accuracy of the films subtitles translation has become a hot topic in current study field. So this study has a certain realistic significance.
This study adopts the theory of foreignization and domestication, to analyze the translation of culture-loaded words in five Chinese films, to find out the problems of domestication and foreignization in films subtitles translation, so as to provide reference for the film subtitles translation.
By hypothesizing and translating some subtitles, a case study would be done. From the study, some culture-loaded words, which were translated by foreignization, can be understood by target audiences. Even if he thinks foreignization is better. As a media of culture, movie aims to disseminate Chinese culture. So, in those cases, translators can use domestication method first to translate culture-loaded words in films subtitles.
