Abstract
This thesis is based on the studies of domestication and foreignization theories,discussing the translation of Chinese movie tiles. Against the backdrop of “going global” strategies, translation of movie titles plays a crucial role in deepening foreign audience’s comprehension of the movies, also, in boosting the spread of the movies. However, concerning the function of culture exchanging that movies posses, theories of domestication and foreignization will certainly attract wide attention .The title translation will inevitably encounter the gap of different languages and cultures. Therefore, it is difficult to achieve equivalence of characteristics of language, culture and function. Then two different opinions will be held, namely, domestication method and foreignization method. Film title needs to not only reflect the artistic value, but also reflect the box office appeal. This paper discusses the application of domestication and foreignization in translation of movie titles through some relevant examples. Furthermore, under these examples, advantages and disadvantages of each approach are analyzed. In this paper, from the perspective of domestication and foreignization theory, characteristics of translation of Chinese film titles and the translation strategies used by translators are analyzed through specific examples.
