Abstract: This thesis is intended to explore the employment of Domestication and Foreignization strategies in the subtitle translation of Modern Family, an American TV drama. In Introduction, the author briefly presents the main characters in the drama and the definition, characteristics, and difficulties of subtitle translation. In the second part, the definitions of domestication and foreignization are discussed. Through examples, domestication translation is classified into three types and foreignization translation is categorized into two types. Both the advantages and disadvantages of the two strategies are compared and analyzed. In Conclusion, the author points out that with different stresses the strategies are complementary. A translator has to study the original carefully and apply the two strategies cautiously in order to keep a balance between the acceptability of translation and the communication of culture.
