Abstract

Chinese folk custom has profound Chinese characteristics. It is an important way for Western readers to learn Chinese culture. In the course of spreading the essence of Chinese folklore to foreign readers, it is particularly important to use the proper translating methods for Chinese folk custom.

This paper illustrates from two translating methods: domestication and foreignization. Firstly, it introduces Chinese folk custom from four aspects which include conception, characteristics, classification and function. Second, the paper analyses the reflection of domestication and foreignization in Chinese folk custom. Finally, the paper lists the application of domestication and foreignization in Chinese folk custom, and then it draws the conclusion: both domestication and foreignization have their schools, each one has its own merits. Only we adopt proper translating methods in different circumstances, can we spread China folk culture efficiently.
