Abstract
As one of the best novelists in the history of western literature, Hemingway has achieved a lot of achievements. A Farewell to Arms was one of his excellent realistic novels in the 20th century in the United States. This novel takes the First World War as the background and the love and warfare as the thread, expounding the author's anti-war attitude towards war. The anti-war ideology of Hemingway was featured by the love tragedy, overall desolate scenery and battle-weary thoughts of characters. Meanwhile this book is also an autobiographical novel as the protagonist Henry is the reflection of Hemingway about his own life experience and war perception. They have similar experiences. Through the description of battlefield experience and love tragedy of Henry, Hemingway exposes the cruelty essence of war and hopes people could stop fighting.
