Abstract
Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure is a representative tragic novel. This paper aims at analyzing the real causes of Jude’s marriage tragedy in Victorian period. Firstly, through simple statement of Jude’s character flaws influence on his marriage life and Jude has confliction between man and environment, then study the social reasons of Jude’s marriage tragedy and sum up Hardy’s personal attitude towards marriage .This thesis analyzes his marriage tragedy then explores the far reaching value of this novel concerning social and personal problem that affect people’s life and fate.
