Abstract
This thesis is a study on the influence of modern translation on Chinese language. Modern translation derives from Opium War in the mid-19th century. Before and after the May Forth Movement, the craving for western advanced technology culture led to the more frequent interaction between Chinese and English and much impact on the language culture.
In this thesis, I first review the origin and development of modern translation, and analyze the historical background of the translation development. Then, I divide the factors of Chinese language Europeanized into three parts: language factors, historical factors and societal factors. In the fourth part, I explore the specific influence of modern translation on Chinese language: vocabulary, morphology and syntax. At last, I put forward the dual characters of modern translation. When we are pleased to accept its superiority, we also should see its negative influence on Chinese language. The interaction effects between languages make us face and solve one problem: how can we treat the influence from the modern translation.
Key words: modern translation, Europeanization, factors, influence
