Abstract
Although Hassan is a loyal and kind man in The Kite Runner, his life is very miserable. Analysis of Hassan’s tragedy from the perspective of eco-criticism has rationality. Eco-criticism suggests that, on the one hand, the individual growth and change must be influenced and restricted by the factors of ecological environment. On the other hand, the individual can change their own development through their own efforts under the control of ecological environment. At that time, Hassan is not only unable to break through the shackles of the pathological environment, but also blindly submit to it. He is the nominal lower race, in fact, he is the illegitimate child of the father who is the upper race. However, he lives in a humble life because his biological father’s selfishness and cowardice. He would go through fire and water to serve his master who is his half-brother, but is discarded. Hassan leaves his master’s shelter and can’t escape the harsh environment during a turbulent time. Eventually, ends his life miserably. All in all, Hassan’s tragedy depends on the dislocation of social cognition, human cognition and mental cognition.
