Abstract
A Farewell to Arms was written on the basis of Hemingway’s own experience as an ambulance driver during the First World War. This novel is one of his most famous masterpieces, he takes the war as a backdrop, tells a love story between an American ambulance driver and an English nurse. Hemingway expresses the theme of anti-war and peace-loving by depicting the miserable fate of Henry and Catherine. Readers can see anti-war sentiments from everywhere in this novel, the cruelty and the evil nature of war were uncovered through the detailed descriptions of battlefield and the depictions of the reality of the war, which all reflect the theme of anti-war. This paper aims to discuss the theme of anti-war by analyzing its contents as well as its way of manifestations.
