ABSTRACT:Since the 1980 s, many western scholars have begun the study of listening comprehension strategies. Domestic researchers started the study of listening comprehension strategies in the 1990s. The purpose of this thesis is to study the types of listening strategies applied by the participants and their problems in using the strategy in TEM-4. The author designed a questionnaire for one hundred and twenty English major students in Honghe University, and also had an interview with ten English majors. The result of the questionnaire shows, the effect of the participants’ application of these strategies is not satisfactory. Among the seven meta-cognitive strategies, there is only one type of the strategy, which has more than half of the participants who often or always use. In seven cognitive strategies, there are only two types of the strategy, which reaches half of the participants who often or always use. Among the four social/affective strategies, there is also one type of the strategy, which reaches half the students who often or always use. The result of the interview shows when the interviewees used the three strategies, they usually came across the problems, such as, they don’t know how to use some strategies, or they have no enough time to apply these strategies, and so on. In the end, the author put forward some advices for how to cause the attention of more students to listening comprehension strategies and how to effectively use the listening strategies.
