ABSTRACT:English reading has certain rules. Mastering reading skills can effectively improve the ability of English reading comprehension. The purpose of this paper is to explore the types of English reading skill applied by the participants in TEM-4, and then to investigate the problems when they use the skill. The author designed a questionnaire for 98 English major students in Honghe University. And an interview was conducted with ten English majors. The results from the questionnaire shows that the participants did applied all the six type of reading skills, but among the 25 items in the questionnaire, only 6 items shows the option of “yes” reached more than 50% of the total. It shows that most of students did not apply the reading skills appropriately in the TEM-4. What’s more, the interview shows that when English major applied the English skill, they met some problems as insufficient vocabulary, defective knowledge background, time-limited, etc. In the end, the author provides English majors with some advices for applying the reading skills, and puts forward some suggestions for English teachers as how to guide students to use reading skills effectively in future English teaching.
