Abstract:Under the background of globalization, the increasingly frequent cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have promoted the import and export of cultural products among different countries. In this process, documentary has gradually become an important carrier of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. The translation of its subtitles has also become an indispensable part of facilitating communication.
From the perspective of Skopos Theory, this paper chooses the BBC documentary Wild China as the text to study subtitle translation of documentary. Through the detailed analysis on specific examples, this paper summarizes the several methods of subtitle translation, such as free translation, amplification, substitution, conversion and omission, hoping to provide some reference and inspiration for the translation of documentary subtitles.
