ABSTRACT
China’s tourism has experienced an unprecedented advancement since the entering of a new century. The translation of Chinese tourist materials plays an important role in enabling the people from other countries to know more about China. Cultural default is a very common phenomenon, which happens among people of the same language system and cultural background and would cause confusion to people from another language system. So the compensation of these defaults is necessary during the translation of tourist texts.
This paper, based on a detailed analysis of some translated tourist texts, discusses about the phenomenon of cultural default and problems such as misunderstanding and confusion caused by tourism translation. Compensation strategies in tourist translation such as annotation, analogy, contextual amplification, paraphrasing and omission, are useful ways to solve the puzzlement caused by cultural default and should be applied flexibly to help improve the quality of C-E tourist translation.
