Abstract

With the rapid development of modern film industry, many excellent Chinese cinematographic works have become international. In this process, taking the diversities between different languages into consideration, it is important to apply suitable subtitle translation strategies to realize the correct film appreciation. So Young obtains great reputation upon being released. This film tells an excellent story and the dialogue is close to people’s real lives. Also, the just right subtitle translation is one of the most important factors, which contributes to its great success. It obeys the basic maxims of Cooperative Principle and gives the equivalent emotional experience to both the target language audiences and source language audiences. Cooperative Principle was first proposed by American linguistic philosopher Herbert Paul Grice at Harvard in 1967. He holds that speakers often unintentionally follow some principles in the process of conversation. As is known, translation is a kind of special conversation. So, it can be used to study the translation between diverse languages. On the basis of Cooperative Principle, this thesis takes So Young as an example to analyze its excellent subtitle translation. The application of Cooperative Principle in subtitle translation avoids the misunderstanding during film appreciation, which results from the differences between Chinese and Western cultures. And then it creates profound significance to culture spreading and communication exchange.
