INTRODUCTION

China Diary: The Life of Mary Austin Endicott is a diary of life against the background of profound political and historical environment. It narrates the experience of Marie and Jim in China in the cold war period after 1947. The author records their impressions and opinions about China. The novel eulogizes China and criticizes China as well, which exerts great effect on the westerners’ understanding of China.

When she was young, little Shirley came to China with her parents who worked as missionaries and later grew up in China. On the basis of her mother Marie's works, the author took advantage of her memory and succeeded in writing a good woman's life. The author also tells the story of her mother and Jim in the maintenance of peace. 

Chapter Twenty-five revolves around two clues. The first is that the couple of Jim and Mary continued to engage in peaceful activities and participated in the Second World Peace Congress after returning to Canada; the second is how the couple of Green Jade and Changlin accepted communism and fought for it, which is the epitome of the revolutionary couple during the Cold War. Both of them reflect the dedication of common women and their desire of a better life.

The book has not yet been translated and is of great significance in translation. How to figure out literary texts is dependent on the translator’s understanding of language resources to a large extent, such as long sentences and vocabulary. Translators will make use of the translation skills to complete the translation practice under the guidance of the teacher.
