INTRODUCTION
The author of Vivian Grey is Benjamin Disraeli, who was the first Earl of Beaconsfield in Britain. He was a statesman, a novelist and a romantic poet. Some of his early stage writings described himself and his double personality of George Gordon Byron Style. His works were to describe the romantic noble life and depict famous figures, which were covered up. Vivian Grey mainly tells us a story which happened in the early stage of 19th century. It tells a young man called Vivian Grey who was to carry on political stitch-up by hook or by crook, so as to achieve political power. It mainly uses conversations and detailed descriptions which give people a feeling as is personally on the scene.
The first part of the thesis is the translation. The translator chooses seven chapters of BookⅡ (from Chapter 6 to Chapter 12) to translate from English to Chinese. In this part, the novel narrates the experience of the leading character Vivian Grey who joins the party, keeps in touch with Mrs. Felix Lorraine and some other different kinds of people. It sketches out the outline of 19th century capitalist noble life.
The second part of the thesis is an essay about the problems arising from the translation and some solutions.
During the translation, the translator combines literal translation and free translation to translate the seven chapters into Chinese. Only in this way, can the translator tell the story better .
