INTRODUCTION
The novel His Enemy His Friend is written by John R. Tunis. The story tells of a German sergeant, a convicted war criminal remembered by the French as the Butcher of Nogent-Plage, who returns to the area twenty years after the war's end to play soccer. He must face the boy he taught to play soccer in that town, Varin. Varin is also the son of one of men that Nazi officer killed. In the novel the game is described greatly and brings a very human nature of crowds when faced with villainous opponents. With the game over the conclusion must come to the book and it will sadden even the hardest of hearts to read the actions of these two men whose lives have been twisted together to share a single moment. This book effectively helped us see two sides of the war. In this process, five chapters were chosen to be translated.
Chapter one gives an account of a Nazi officer who was once the only person dare to complain about the German soldiers and protest against them which won him friendliness among villagers. Besides, the story tells about the deep friendship between German sergeant and the little boy as well.
Chapter two recounts villagers’gratitude and love to the sergeant from their individual perspective. The sergeant seems to be the most agile of soldiers coming into Nogent-Plage. His highly obeying orders and fulfilling responsibilities attracted Caen supreme commander’s attention to grant a medal for the town to express the correct attitude of the German army.
Chapter three introduces the geographical environment around the town and the sergeant fortress that the German invaders commanded local villagers to build. It describes villagers’ mood changes about the German invaders through that period of time and pictured the German soldiers’ difference from the past in this town. These new forces seem to always be alert and ready to anything. That hangs over the nervous atmosphere in the town.
Chapter four shows a scene when the German sergeant and French boy walked together in the grand street and saw Mr. Pere Clement directing the local kids to play football, he was unable to press his inner impulse and also joined in. His adept and excellent ball technology always draw whether men and women, the elderly and children’s attention and made them gather in Nogent-Plage.
Chapter five is mainly about the only teacher Mr. Varin who was living in this town and talked about his profound unusual friendship with the German sergeant in war time. That the widow Mrs. Dupont sought help from Mr. Varin completely proves he is a trustworthy and amiable people in the village.
