INTRODUCTION
A Good Man, by Jennifer L. Armstrong, describes the love story between Maggie and Douglas. Depressed by the former relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Maggie became more mature and prone to take religious belief into account when getting along with Douglas. Douglas, however, she thought, had varied belief from her. As she struggled not to think about Douglas, she got along well with a new online friend, Christopher, who unexpectedly turned out to be Douglas. Luckily, Maggie found that he was also just the one for her.
The translation text mainly deals with two chapters in the novel, whose contents are mainly related to Maggie’s daily work. As a host of the book meeting, Maggie was much occupied with reading four books, plus her updating the blog. These four books on religious belief have brought her into another world where similar belief outweighs her emotional feelings towards Douglas. Meanwhile, her new online friend, Christopher, seemed to share the same belief with her. Deeply impressed by his warm care and sincere advice to her work, she set up her mind to develop further relationships with him.
The thesis contains two sections, which include the translation text of Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 and the report on translation strategies. In the pursuit of an idiomatic translation, the fluency and the spirit of the original text have been fully considered. To achieve that goal, flexible translation strategies have been employed. The analyses and summary on the translation strategies are the main components of the report.
