《贫穷的聪明人》一书是美国1921年小说类的畅销书，它是一般的文学小说，讲述了第一次世界大战对普通人所产生的影响。那时人们的日子很艰难。生、死、重建是这本书所探讨的主题。这本书的作者玛丽·罗伯茨·莱因哈特（1876～1958），一位多产的悬疑/侦探女作家，她开创了“早知如此”流派，有“美国的阿加莎·克里斯蒂”之称。本次翻译实践节选书中的第十五、十六章节进行翻译。
之所以翻译所这两个章节。是因为这两个章节对我来说有一定的挑战性。文中的长难句较多。还有一些模棱两可的词。
第15章讲述了卡梅伦住进了博伊德太太的家中，想要帮助这一家摆脱沮丧。接着亨德里克斯找到卡梅伦想要卡梅伦让他当上镇长所发生的一系列事情。从这一章节间接地可以看出人们生活的并不开心。
第16章讲述了祖父安东尼反对莉莉与埃克斯交朋友，也不同意莉莉去道尔家，但却遭到莉莉的反抗所发生的一系列的争执。
两章看似比较琐碎，但都能隐约感觉一战对人们的影响。
INTRODUCTION
A poor wise man is the best-selling novel in the 1921s. The book is a literature novel, which describes the impact on the people of World War One. In those tough days, people lived desperately. And the theme of the book is “birth, death and establishment.” The author Mary Roberts Rinehart is a famous American novelist in the 19th century and creates the genre of “Had-I-But-Known”. She also has the reputation of American Agatha. In the translation practice, I translated Chapter 15 and Chapter 16.
Although there are certain difficulties in these two chapters, I chose them in order to challenge myself. During the process of translation, I met with long sentences and ambiguous words.
In Chapter 15, it tells the story that Cameron lives in the Boyd’s house and helps them out of depression. Then Hendricks comes to find Cameron, and he hopes Cameron to help him run for the mayor of the city. From this chapter we can indirectly see the tough life of the people.
In Chapter 16, it tells that neither does Anthony allow Lily to traffic with Akers, nor does he agree her to go to Doyles. But Lily defies her family.
It seems that there is no obvious links between the two chapters, but we can feel the impact on the ordinary people’s life of World War One.
