ABSTRACT:People live in the world where people are more closely connected than ever before, as media and internet have enabled people to have access to news several thousands of miles away. However, while modern technology has provided a great convenience for humans, the language gap is not easy to bridge. English as the most widely used language in the world plays the role to connect the whole world. Under this circumstance, China needs a tool to get a large amount of information and one of the most effective is the news.
The news introduces a variety of information of foreign countries like the economy and politics, and it is an effective way for people to understand foreign countries. Whether it is to translate the domestic hot events into English, or to translate English news into Chinese has brought new challenges to the translators. Such challenges also put forward higher requirements for translation, and hence translators must overcome them with new ideas.
The paper is aimed at in-depth discussion of features of English news. To begin with, the author introduces the background and significance of English news. In addition, the language features of news English are expounded from the aspects of vocabulary and sentence with the focus on brief words, frequent use of proper nouns and passive voice. Finally the authors utilize a large range of examples in the western magazines to expound the corresponding translation methods such as extension of semantic meaning, amplification, explanatory note. It is found that the research on feature of English news is very important in the translation of news English, which makes the translators appropriately choose translation methods according to the features of news English and its readers.
