Abstract:This study aims to compare the two female characters in Thackeray’s representative work Vanity Fair. After a brief introduction to the author and the novel, the essay makes a comparison between the two heroines from the perspectives of their different characters and different attitudes towards children, friendship, love and marriage. Then the essay analyzes the causes of their differences. Amelia and Becky live in different environments and have different family backgrounds, but they both suffer from women’s low social position of their time. The paper concludes that the root the two heroines’ tragedies are the male-dominated and money-oriented society in Victorian time.
