Abstract: With the development of times and under the impact of globalization, each country is not able to exist independently. They are supposed to communicate with different countries and spread their local cultures to the outside. So cross-cultural communication is becoming increasingly important. Chinese culture, especially Chinese idioms, as the essence of Chinese traditional culture, is drawing more and more attentions from home and abroad. Chinese idioms are the specific and vivid reflections of Chinese history and convey rich cultural characteristics of Chinese and Chinese culture. However, due to its distinctive cultural attributes and background, it is hard for scholars to translate idioms. Based on the achievements of previous studies on cross-cultural communication and idiom translation all over the world, the paper lists some common ways used in idiom translation from the perspective of cross-cultural communication such as literal translation, free translation and borrowed translation, so that foreigners can learn more about Chinese traditional cultures and Chinese cultures can be promoted to the world.
