Abstract: This essay carries out a study of the southern American society in which Faulkner lives and the historical background against which Faulkner creates The Sound and the Fury. Though this study, the characteristics of Faulkner’s creation thought are dug out. And the association between the theme and the characters’ destiny in this novel is explored. This study enables the readers to put themselves under the historical background and to understand that the characters’ destiny is inseparable with the social context. If the context of Faulkner’s creation, including his life is understood, we can better understand the writing background and get a profound understanding of the culture of the American South, so as to better grasp Faulkner’s creation thought.
