Abstract:C. S. Lewis is an outstanding Britain writer, critic, and Christian apologist. He suffered a lot in his whole life, meanwhile his belief towards Christ was swinging like a pendulum. In the extremely rough situation, he doubted his God even gave it up, and he even interrogated the God. While in this stiff situation, he figured out the God’s kindly feeling step by step until he made his mind back to his belief. A Grief Observed was written after his wife’s death, and it was well demonstrated in the case of his sorrowful feeling, the memory of his wife, and the complainant to the God. From the book, we can find that C. S. Lewis hold the view that sufferings and belief are not two disconnected parts but supplement each other, that is dialectical unity.

Key words:C. S. Lewis; sufferings; belief; dialectical unity; the concept of suffering
