Abstract: This thesis has analyzed the translation of culturally-loaded words in The Journey to the West. According to culture classification, this thesis carries out a detailed analysis of culturally-loaded words in The Journey to the West by Anthony C. Yu. It analyses the literal translation, transliteration, free translation, substitution, word addition and full translation strategies of Yu and concludes that the purpose of Yu’s translation is to promote and deliver traditional Chinese culture to the largest possible extent. The detailed analysis of translation strategies of culturally-loaded words provides reference for translation of other classical cultural works in China.
