The major barrier in Hakka students’ learning of English pronunciation comes from the interference of their native Hakka dialect. To explore how the Hakka dialect interferes with English at the phonetic level, a detailed comparison between Hakka and English vowels, consonants, rhythms and intonations will help the teachers to analyze errors, explore the solutions to the problems, and reduce the negative effect caused by Hakka in learning.
Pronunciation is the foundation in language elements. Therefore, I hope that this comparative study of the Hakka and English phonetic systems may contribute to a better understanding of English pronunciation so that Hakka learner can speak English better.
