ABSTRACT:With the continuous development of Chinese film career, more and more foreign films have been introduced into China. Nevertheless, due to the social and cultural background and different understanding towards translation standards in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland, there are many distinct differences of film titles translation.

   Title is the film's symbol. A good translation can vividly reveal theme, succinctly summary film content, and cause the audience with rich imagination and thus induce them to see the movie. The translating strategies of English film titles include literal translation, liberal translation and so on. However, great differences exist in film title translation among China mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, which reflect the disparity of translating strategies and value in these three communities.

   Overall, Hong Kong’ s translators mainly adopt the approach of domestication to rewrite the imported foreign film titles, showing obvious arbitrary and higher degrees of freedom; Taiwan's film distributors are more cautious than the Hong Kong counterparts in choosing translating strategies. The translators in Hong Kong and Taiwan focus more on how to attract the audience's attention so as to pursue maximization of box office revenue. However, the translating methods adopted in China mainland seem to be the most conservative as a result of the culture background.

   This essay aims at,through analyzing the features of the movie title translations in Mainland,Hong Kong and Taiwan, drawing tentative conclusions on the underlying cause, merits and demerits of the translating strategies.

摘要:随着中国影视事业的不断发展,越来越多的外国影片被介绍到中国。但是,由于各地的社会文化背景以及对片名翻译标准理解的不同,海峡两岸三地对影视片名的翻译存在较大差异。

   片名是影片的识别标志,好的片名翻译能鲜明地揭示影片主题,简练地概括影片内容,并能引起观众的丰富联想与观看欲望。英语电影片名翻译,有直译、意译等多种方法。然而,内地、香港和台湾在英语影片片名翻译上存在着很大差异。这种差异,体现的是内地和香港之间翻译策略、价值观的不同。

   就整体而言,香港地区主要采用归化手法改写所引进的外语电影片名,表现出明显的随意性和较高的自由度;台湾的电影发行商在选择外语电影片名翻译策略时不如香港同行随意,而是更多地侧重于如何吸引观众的注意力,以追求票房收益的最大化;由于各种限制或政策规定,中国大陆的外语电影片名翻译手段可归于最为保守的行列。

   本文的主要目的,在于分析两岸三地对于影视片名的翻译的异同,分析其原因以及在翻译片名时采取的翻译手法和技巧,并对各种翻译手法的优缺点进行了探讨。

   Translating film titles is an interesting, meaningful and challenging activity. Currently, English film title translation is still a problematic issue and less explored subject. 

   The translation strategies adopted in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are different. And the different versions demonstrate various features of each community. Actually, the translation of each community has its respective merits and defects, strong points as well as limitations. 

   The situation is that, of the same original film title, China mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan’s version coexist, causing confusion and trouble to the audience. Furthermore, loose regulation on film title translation and inadequate academic and theoretical studies on film title translation have worsened the current disunity state.  

   But if we look on the bright side we could find that the insertion of colloquialism and even vulgarization found in the communities of Hong Kong and Taiwan, though having given rise to some disputation and criticism, can still bring vividness to target and potential audience.  

   It is hoped that a day will come when the translated versions of foreign films could be accepted by all these three somewhat culturally and politically different communities.
