Abstract:Although the use of discourse markers in Chinese-English drama translation is probably one of the most neglected fields in literary translation, it is necessary for translators and researchers who work on Chinese-English drama translation to attach importance to it. This paper focuses on the functions and appropriate application of discourse markers in Chinese-English drama translation. By analyzing the use of discourse markers in the two translated versions of Teahouse by Chinese translator Ying Ruocheng and Canadian translator John Howard-Gibbon, the functions of discourse markers in Chinese-English drama translation were concluded at language level and character level as follows. First, the application of discourse markers in Chinese-English drama translation makes the language more suitable for English drama, that is to say, more like everyday conversations and more coherent and interactive. Secondly, discourse markers in Chinese-English drama translation serve to better reveal the features of the characters and better display their mental activities in the original works. Following the discussion on the functions, possible ways of the use of discourse markers in Chinese-English drama translation, namely, using equivalents, alteration and addition are suggested for the translators’ reference.

摘要:话语标记词在中英文学作品翻译中的运用可以说是一个鲜被讨论的领域，但是对于研究者与译者，尤其是翻译中国戏剧的译者来说，话语标记词的作用与运用是非常重要的。这篇论文着重探讨了话语标记词在中英戏剧翻译中的作用及其正确的使用方法。通过分析由中国翻译家英若诚和加拿大翻译家霍华德所著的《茶馆》的两个英译本, 本文首先总结概括了话语标记词在中英戏剧翻译中的两个作用。第一，话语标记词的使用使翻译作品中的语言更适合英语戏剧，这一点主要是从语言的自然性，连贯度和互动性探讨的。第二，使用话语标记词能更好地展现原作中人物的特点和心理活动。紧接着，本文提出了三个在中英戏剧翻译中使用话语标记词的方法以供译者参考，即使用对等词，变更和添加法。
