Abstract:In recent years, researchers at home and abroad have gained great attention to the studies of the relationship between the mother tongue and second language writing. Accordingly, various studies on the phenomenon of the L1 transfer have been evoked both in the foreign countries and in China. Nevertheless, there are too many aspects of the L1 transfer to expound, and most of studies focused their attentions mainly on translation. Therefore, this thesis focuses on understanding the differences of pro-drop property in syntactic structure of Chinese and English, that is to say, the different features between Chinese as a pro-drop language and English as a non-pro-drop language are compared, so that English language learners can reduce the negative transfer part of Chinese thinking on English writing, and to improve the quality of English writing work.
In this study, we first collect 100 writing assignments from Chinese senior English majors as the research data. Then we analyze the chosen subjects and come to the results. Thus, after analyzing the data, we come to the conclusion that Chinese pro-drop property has little or even no negative transfer to senior English majors’ English writing. Moreover, we hope that this study will provide some valuable suggestions for English learners in second language writing by decreasing influences that by mother tongue interference element.
