Abstract:Fuzzy language is one of the intrinsic and indispensable features in natural language. It refers to the form of language whose concepts of linguistic expressions do not have sharply defined boundaries, or the natural language that has fuzziness as its inherent property. Currently, more and more scholars have come to realize the importance of fuzzy language in our daily communication. As a form of mass media, news has an important position in people’s daily life. Accuracy, brevity and clarity are always pursued by news reporters. But, accuracy doesn’t equal to precision, so fuzziness does exist in each style of English, including journalistic English. Lastly, the pragmatic analysis of fuzziness in English news is conducted and come to the conclusion that appropriate use of fuzzy language can fulfill the pragmatic functions of increasing credibility, avoiding giving details, enhancing self-protecting, achieving politeness and creating persuasive effect. Therefore, English news not only permits the use or presence of fuzziness but also relies on them to reflect the truthfulness, objectivity and timeliness. Making an all-around and deep exploration of fuzzy language in English news not only promotes the research of hedges but also makes contributions to pragmatics.

摘要：语言的模糊性是自然语言最本质和最必不可少的特征之一。模糊语言是指语言表达式所呈现出的不精确现象或指带有模糊性的自然语言。近年来，越来越多的学者开始认识到模糊语言在我们日常交流中的重要性。作为一种大众传媒形势，新闻在人们的生活中有着举足轻重的地位。准确，简洁，明晰一直以来都是新闻工作者的追求。但是，准确并不等同于精确，所以模糊性确实存在于每一种英文文体之中，其中也包括新闻文体。最后，通过对英语新闻中模糊语的语用功能进行分析从而得出结论。模糊语言的适当使用可以实现各种语用功能。例如，增加可信性，避免过分详细和起到自我保护的作用，也可以使语句更加礼貌，有较强的说服力。因此，英语新闻不仅允许模糊语的出现和使用，而且依赖这些模糊语来更好的体现新闻的真实，客观和及时的特点。对英语新闻中的模糊语进行全方位和深入的探索，不仅进一步促进了对模糊语的研究，而且也对语用功能方面做出了贡献。
