Abstract:Xiehouyu (XHY), as a wit and facetious language form, is created by the Chinese ordinary people in accordance with their own living practice. They made great contributions for the creation of XHY. As XHY is short, vivid and briefly spoken, it is spread far and spoken widely among the whole world and is considered as a type of language of Chinese people in a particular way. During the thousands of years’ development, XHY has become one of the indispensable components of Chinese cultures.
After summing up the previous researchers’ results and combining the usage of XHY as the theme, Skopos Theory as the guidance, this thesis tends to analyze the XHY translation with Skopos Theory. The author attempts to prove that the Skopos Theory is applicable to the translation of XHY, and it is also feasible enough to be used as the translator’s guide to translate the XHY into English. In accordance with application of the Skopos Theory in XHY translation, this thesis presents some basic translation strategies and methods, and makes us have a basic view of the XHY translation in the light of Skopos Theory through collected cases.
