Abstract: The novel The Thorn Birds portrays two love tragedies befalling Meggie and her mother Fee. Meggie was determined, beautiful and pure，while Fee was reticent, graceful and educated. Both afflicted with the severe pain of a failed love, they eventually realized their incapacity for altering their tragic fate. This paper analyzes the similarities and differences of the two tragedies of Meggie and Fee by comparison and contrast, thus revealing that their tragedies, rooted in the social background, were irrevocable and inevitable.

摘要：小说《荆棘鸟》描述了发生在梅吉和她母亲菲身上的爱情悲剧。梅吉坚强，美丽而又纯洁；菲沉默寡言，举止优雅而又颇有教养。然而，母女二人却一生饱受痛苦的煎熬并最终意识到自己无力改变注定的悲剧。本文采用比较与对比的手法，分析了梅吉和菲二人悲剧的异同点，旨在揭示在那样的时代背景下，二人悲剧命运的不可逆转性。
