Abstract: Martin Eden is Jack London’s semi-autobiographical novel. The hero Martin Eden is a diligent, honest and perseverant poor sailor. The novel describes his pursuit of his dream with his superman-like willpower. London has read many philosophers’ works, among which Friedrich Nietzsche exerted a great influence upon him. So a Nietzschean character Martin Eden was born. In this novel, the Nietzschean superman idea refers to the following four parts: man to be overcome, the will to power, individualist and nihilism. The first three can be found in Martin’s striving process while nihilism is embodied after his success. The achievement of his dream did not bring happiness to Martin. The success cut off his tie with the working-class and at the same time he found the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie. So he lost himself, seized by nihilism immensely. Finally he chose to commit suicide as a failed Nietzschean.
