Abstract: Toni Morrison is an outstanding African American woman writer. The Bluest Eye, one of her earliest works published in 1970, exerts powerful influence in presenting the plight and struggle of black women who have long been silenced in a white dominated society. Focusing on two salient aspects of the white culture in the novel: the standard of physical beauty and family value, this thesis discusses black women's two different responses, namely, the subdued and rebellious toward white culture. After a careful study of the black women's two contrasting attitudes, the author of this paper concludes that Toni Morrison, by her keen grasp of the way that the individual characters in The Bluest Eye react differently to the white culture, demystifies the myth of white superiority, and through the voice of a rebellious narrator, Claudia, directs all her black sisters to resist the racist values and stick to their own culture so that they will flourish as themselves.
