Abstract: This thesis aims to study the changes of Herzog’s values. As the main character in Herzog, the famous novel written by Saul Bellow, Herzog is a Jew who has grown up in America. The thesis describes his discrimination against women, confusion about his own identity, as well as his over reliance on thinking and knowledge. The focus of the thesis is then put on the analysis of the process that Herzog gets rid of hatred and discrimination against women, and also the process during which he gets clarification of his identity and stops over reliance on thinking and knowledge. It is concluded that it is the salvation of both love and nature that makes Herzog return to his normal life and understand the real meaning of being oneself.
