Abstract: As one of the most distinguished novelists of American Southern Literature, William Faulkner is expert in wide employment of Christian archetypes and symbolic images to enable his master piece The Sound and the Fury to transcend specific plots, time and space reaching a higher point of exploration of human nature. The Sound and the Fury is now generally considered as the representative work of the stream of consciousness of the twentieth century. With the artistic techniques of change of time and space, multiple point of views, images, symbols, the novel expresses the decay of the Compson in several decades. This thesis attempts to make a study of the biblical images of The Sound and the Fury so as to delineate the resemblance between The Sound and the Fury and The Bible and discloses Faulkner's exploration into humanity and society.
