Abstract: Virginia Woolf is acknowledged as the pioneer figure and spiritual leader of the modernism and the feminist movement. She is unwilling to position herself in the single sexual polarity and confine herself to the prison of gender. Androgyny is the best state of the relationship between men and women. It means one has characteristics of both woman and man. The paper aims to analyze her representative work To the Lighthouse, discussing the characteristics of Mrs. Ramsay and Mr. Ramsay within the development of their lives in order to show the unity of masculinity and femininity. To the Lighthouse concentrates on the construction of union of opposite sex represented by Mr. Ramsay and Mrs. Ramsay. It is a vivid illustration of Woolf’s androgynous thoughts typified for its force of deconstructing metaphysical binary opposition.
