Abstract: With the further development of global integration, economic, political, cultural exchanges are becoming increasingly frequent. Nowadays, International conferences and seminars are held throughout the world, and participants are from different nations. With regard of cultural and linguistic differences, interpreters need play the vital role as bridges in order to promote better communication and realize altogether wins. The quality and level of interpreters have a direct effect on the audience’s understanding of what speakers deliver. Therefore, in the actual interpretation, pauses in interpreting cannot be overestimated. Pauses make some difference on interpretation’s fluency so that they influence the quality and level. As for the pauses in interpreting, I analyze the pause causes from three main aspects: linguistic factor, nonlinguistic factor and mechanism of interpretation. On this basis, it turns out that pause can be further categorized, such as silent pause, segmentation pause, hesitation pause and so on. What’s more, the paper focuses on the main types of interpretation: sight interpreting, simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting. Then I make further analysis of their pause characteristics and put forward corresponding solution strategy, as well as scientific training methods to make reasonable pauses in interpreting, which contributes to providing some useful reference for interpretation teaching and improve the quality and level of interpreters.
