Abstract：Gone with the Wind depicted the complicated love between Scarlett Ashley and Rhett, running parallel with the description of the realistic American Civil War. Some critics only focus on the character and fate of the heroine Scarlett. However, in fact, its theme----gone with the wind, is of much more significance. The thesis is intended to analyze the novel from the point: what is gone. After tracing the life of the author Margaret Mitchell and the background of the Slavery and the Civil War, there are clear conclusions: the delicacy of the aristocratic life, the old value and Scarlett’s love were gone with the wind. Although Margaret’s sympathetic tone for the Slavery and the southern plantationers was criticized, the novel may exert positive influence on the American history.
