Abstract: In recent years, scholars at home and abroad pay more attention to taboo. Based on previous research, the writer makes further study on the differences between Chinese and English taboo. This thesis firstly introduces the source, definition, and characteristics of taboo. Then it comparatively analyzes the differences between Chinese and English taboo in the aspects of numbers, appellation, vulgarities, and privacy. Finally, the causes of differences are analyzed from the aspects of cultural customs and religious belief. The aim of this thesis is to help people to have a better understanding of taboo and to improve their cross-cultural communicative skills.

摘要：近年来国内外学者对禁忌语的研究越来越关注，结合前人的研究，笔者对英汉禁忌语的差异做了进一步的探索与研究。首先阐述了禁忌语的来源、定义、特征及重要性，然后从数字、称呼、粗俗语及个人隐私四方面研究了英汉禁忌语的差异之处，最后从文化习俗和宗教信仰的角度分析了其存在差异的原因，旨在帮助人们更好的理解禁忌语，减少和避免跨文化交际中的误解，达到理想的交际效果。
